What the scan shows

  • That the pregnancy is in the womb, which is the first thing most parents want to know.
  • The heartbeat, usually visible from about 6 weeks.
  • How many babies there are.
  • A measurement from head to bottom that dates the pregnancy and gives you an estimated due date.

How it is done

Between 6 and 8 weeks the clearest view is often an internal scan. Your sonographer explains why before anything starts, and it only happens with your consent; you can always ask for a scan over the tummy instead. From about 9 weeks a scan over the tummy usually shows everything.

Who performs it

A qualified sonographer, trained in pregnancy ultrasound. They talk you through what you are seeing, answer your questions and write a short report before you leave. You can meet each clinic's team on its clinic page.

Before you come

  • A comfortably full bladder: drink about 500 ml of water an hour before, then try not to go
  • The first day of your last period, or your due date if you have one
  • Your phone, so the images can be sent to you before you leave

Questions

About the Early Pregnancy Scan

Is it too early to see anything at 6 weeks?

At 6 weeks the baby is tiny, but in most pregnancies the heartbeat is already visible. If it is too early to be sure, your sonographer will tell you and offer a free rescan 7 to 10 days later. example

Will I need an internal scan?

Only if the view over the tummy is not clear enough, which is more likely before 8 weeks. It is your choice and it is never done without your consent.

Does this replace my NHS dating scan?

No. Please keep your 12 week NHS appointment. Our scan is extra reassurance and does not include the NHS screening tests.
