What the scan shows

  • Whether your baby is a boy or a girl
  • The heartbeat
  • Your baby moving and how they are lying
  • A rough check of size against the weeks of the pregnancy

How it is done

The scan is over the tummy. If you would like a surprise, tell your sonographer at the start: they will keep the screen turned away, write the answer on a card and seal it in an envelope for your reveal.

Who performs it

A qualified sonographer, trained in pregnancy ultrasound. They talk you through what you are seeing, answer your questions and write a short report before you leave. You can meet each clinic's team on its clinic page.

Before you come

  • A drink of water an hour before helps the view
  • A sweet snack: a little sugar often gets a sleepy baby moving
  • Your guests: up to 4 people can join you

Questions

About the Gender Scan

How accurate is it at 16 weeks?

From 16 weeks an experienced sonographer can usually see clearly. We only tell you when we are confident; if we are not, we say so.

What if the baby will not cooperate?

Sometimes babies lie with their legs crossed. We give you a short walk and try again, and if we still cannot see, we invite you back for a free rescan. example

Can I bring the family?

Yes, up to 4 guests including children, who are welcome as long as an adult looks after them.
